Oscar Peterson was truly a marvelous musician. Parts of this transcription were some of the toughest bits of piano wizardry that I've ever tried to learn, and I don't think I would have the nerve or ability to perform it like this live in front of an audience...I still prefer his original recording to how this came out. It baffles me as to how Oscar Peterson could come up with so much of this on the spot. I could also tell from trying to play this that he had VERY BIG HANDS! Was definitely a stretch for me...literally and figuratively....

Made this for Martin Luther King Day a while ago. Oscar Peterson's "Hymn to Freedom" is one of my favorite musical tributes to the Civil Rights Movement. Things really pick up after about 2 minutes. Most of the piano part here is based on a transcription of his 1964 Paris version...there are a lot of interesting rhythms that look kind of weird and hard to follow when notated, so doing things a bit by ear really helped, too. Found this to be very difficult...baffles me as to how he came up with so much of this on the spot one evening almost fifty years ago...don't know if I'll be trying another Peterson transcription anytime soon, haha...
